Short Explanation of Project #1

Comparing Hermas of the New Finds to the earlier-published Athous Hermas of Simonides

It is well known that the 1859 Sinaiticus Shepherd of Hermas text is surprisingly close to the Simonides Athous text of 1855-56. (See James Donaldson.) Especially considering their supposed vastly different history. This is normally glossed over, and the Sinaiticus text is given second fiddle in analysis to the later-discovered papyri Greek texts.

The St. Catherine’s New Finds of 1975 added some additional sections from Similitudes to what we have available from Sinaiticus. While fragments, there are some solid sections of multiple verses that are accessible, and with superb transcription from the Codex Sinaiticus Project.

Afawk, these have never been compared directly to the previously published Athous text from Simonides. The Simonides text is available online in two well-printed editions. First the Anger & Dindorf text of 1855-56 and then the 1856 text that involved Tischendorf. We believe these two texts in two books are substantially identical, although using different line lengths. Except in a separate spot, which is unrelated to what shows up in the New Finds. (We have a separate discussion of this 1855-56 history.)

The fact of finding Hermas in the New Finds has its own peculiarities. When Porphiry Uspensky reported on his 1845 and 1850 trips to Sinai, his account appears to include the full Hermas, there is no indication of a truncated book.

Plus Tischendorf made some surprising twists in first accusing and then retracting the Athous text of having later medieval Latin elements.

One hypothesis is that the similarity of the full Hermas in Athous and Sinaiticus was embarrassing to Tischendorf, and thus parts of Hermas ended up discarded in the dump room.

Thus, we want to see how close in fact are the Athous and New Finds texts.

We plan to start this project by simply comparing a section, about 15 book lines, and noting differences. The section chosen at random, there are not many spots of Sinaiticus New Finds clean text. Some differences might simply be stylistic, as those involving the nomina sacra and the movable nu. Other differences could simply be minor typos. Those can all be noted, but the key to our study are different phrases and words. Also, we will look closely at the substantive differences, in terms of the Hermas vorlage and the specific words used and also, what is in later-discovered papyri, if they exist for those sections. If we have a section with the three-spot, New Finds, Athous and papyri, that will add to our analysis.

(Note: this type of 3-spot study is also a missing link in looking at the earlier beginning part of Hermas. One would expect a 4th century Alexandrian Greek text to be far closer to a c. AD 500-600 Alexandrian papyrus than to a 1400s text. However, if manuscripts from Mt. Athous were used in creating Sinaiticus c. AD 1840, then Sinaiticus and Athous will be close, with the papyri different from both.)

There are possible controls and second steps, however #1 is to simply compare a modest section in:

a) New Finds Hermas
b) Athous Hermas, noting if the two books are essentially identical

Short Explanation of Project #2

Reviewing the James Donaldson late Greek and Latinisms in Hermas that have Papyri sections

James Donaldson in two articles c. 1870 asserted that a good number of words in Hermas and Barnabas from Athous and Sinaiticus indicated a much later than AD 400 origin. We will focus on Hermas, one reason being the familiarity we now have from Project #1. (However, Barnabas is a possibility, looking not at the papyri, but Codex Hierosolymitanus, discovered by Philotheos Bryennioa,, so we should look at the availability of that comparison. However it is 11th century.)

By checking what is in the papyri (Amherst and others) discovered after Donaldson wrote, we can go much further in evaluating the James Donaldson assertion.

Anywhere they have the same highlighted word, the Donaldson claim loses pizazz. However, if they have a more traditional Greek word from antiquity, that works to vindicate the Donaldson claim.

Note that some of his examples have been criticized, so we will take that into consideration.

I utilized the digitized text of Sinaiticus online at codexsinaiticus.org. it is meticulous. I also added the digitized text of every variant in the notes.
