The Leningrad Codex is a fully vocalized biblical text, assuring correct pronunciation of each word. Moreover, it contains all the accent marks (te’amim) above and below the letters.
These accent marks serve three disparate functions: a) they are notes for cantillation of the word; b) they show the part of the word that should be stressed or accented; c) they serve as marks for phrasing and punctuation. It should be noted that the handwritten Torah scroll has only the letters of the words and no vowels points or other marks, for no vocalization of the text or trop are permitted on the Torah parchment. The Codex was acquired by a conman named Abraham Firkovich (who offered no details in his letters or in his autobiography as to where he got it) and then sold it to the then St. Petersburg Imperial Library.
According to its colophon, the codex was copied in Cairo from manuscripts written by Aaron ben Moses ben Asher. Unusual for a masoretic codex, the same man (Samuel ben Jacob) wrote the consonants, the vowels and the Masoretic notes.).

For minute masoretic details, however, Israeli and Jewish scholars have shown a marked preference for modern Hebrew editions based upon the Aleppo Codex. These editions use the Leningrad Codex as the most important source (but not the only one) for the reconstruction of parts of the Aleppo Codex that have been missing since 1947.

Its former owner, the Crimean Karaite collector JEW Abraham Firkovich, left no indication in his writings where he had acquired the codex, which was taken to Odessa in 1838 and later transferred to the Imperial Library in St Petersburg.
Firkovich was a liar and forger of the first order as per Abraham Harkavy who was head of the Oriental Division in the Imperial Public Library, Russia.
