The subsequent unrest on the Holy Mountain, on the occasion of the Greek uprising for its independence in 1820–1821, forced many peaceful Svyatogorsk residents to leave their monasteries and seek shelter beyond the boundaries of the Holy Mountain. After the conclusion of peace in 1830, the gathered small and poor brethren of the Russian Panteleimon Monastery, led by their abbot Gerasim, the successor of Sava, on the advice of the wise elder Hierodeacon Benedict, decided to invite Russian monks to the monastery in order to establish a monastery with their help.
