Kathleen McNamee, Sigla and Select Marginalia in Greek Literary Papyri (Bruxelles: Fondation Égyptologique Reine Élisabeth, 1992), 12, points out, “Interestingly, although the sign may strike the eye as having the shape of an arrow, its ‘business end’—the directional pointer—was normally the open part of its central shaft. Thus the 🡧 typically served as a pointer upward, 🡥 down.”
