In the preface to the section of his 1567 German hymnbook containing hymns for the season of Trinity, the Roman Catholic hymnodist Johann Leisentrit exhorted his readers to avoid the errors of Arius and Sabellius. He indicated two passages in Scripture that reveal the mystery of the Trinity most clearly: the hand that wrote on the wall at Belshazzar’s feast (Dan 5:5) — on the basis of Is 40:12, Leisentrit argued that it had three fingers, a figure of the Trinity — and the Johannine comma.69
