To the above could be added evidence from the Aramaic portions of the OT. A strange curiosity is the peal imperfect 3rd masculine singular of the verb HWH, which should be written consonantally "YHWH," as it is indeed written in the 5th-6th century B.C. secular Jewish Aramaic papyrii from Elephantine / Aswan in Egypt. But in the masoretic text of Daniel, an inexplicable "L" is substituted for the initial "Y" to avoid spelling the consonants of the Divine name (as well as following an alternative spelling of the final consonant, putting aleph in the place of the H). Why would they do that? Because the vowels for the proper original form indicate the pronunciation was "yeh(e)weh," dangerous close to the actual pronunciation of the Divine name.
peal imperfect "elephantine" "nehemia gordon"
God's name: readable but unpronounceable, why?
