… photographs of him, as well as letters about him. …The Charles Stewart who wrote the biography and was of similar age to Simonides lived near Brighton until he emigrated in 1862. He was a journalist and newspaper editor. He had 11 children. The Charles Stewart who was a zoologist was a considerably younger man and no relation.. …know his life story now with letters, photos, house he lived in etc. He really did exist and was the sort of person who could put the biography together fairly quickly from information provided by Simonides.

No one could find him once the 'Simonides Affair' broke, and there was speculation that it was Simonides himself (same initials), or a wry pseudonym (Charles Stewart was a pretender to the throne). If you look at writings around 1863 and 1864 you will see that many doubted his existence. …

He emigrated in 1862, and his life thereafter was much more promising than his life in England. Interestingly, his eldest son, also called Charles, became a newspaper editor. He himself changed career and worked for the Crown, but he did continue writing, for example about local history, and they are published (though not in UK).….. the 1861 census returns and death records … there was a Charles Stewart in England in 1861 who was not in the UK after 1862, yet had not died, so must have emigrated. …. I found him thousands of miles away.… may publish it some time, including photos, because it will finally put this matter to rest (after 162 years!!).

btw, on Charles Stewart, the main concern was countering the frequent speculation that he was made up by Simonides. Since he is verified as a Journalist that can entirely put to rest those (frequent, awkward) speculations.

Hi Andrew.

All the speculation about Charles Stewart can now be put to rest. A gentleman in England, Kevin McGrane, has solved this mystery.

Stewart was a journalist and newspaper editor from near Brighton with a large family who emigrated from England in 1862. Kevin may publish all the details.

As a gentleman in the UK, Kevin McGrane, researched Charles Stewart and determined that he was a newspaper writer/editor with a large family that left the UK in 1862. ... Kevin may publish all this, but I would say his research on this point looks solid. So, in summary, the identity of Charles Stewart is confirmed, he was in journalism.

It looks like Pasquale Massimo Pinto has the basic Charles Stewart, Journalist, information here in 2022!

Da Costantino ad Alcibiade Simonidis. Morte e riapparizione di un falsario (2022)
Pasquale Massimo Pinto
https://ricerca.uniba.it/handle/11586/411995

Abstract
The paper deals with the evidence for the death of Kostantinos Simonidis, the notorious 19th century forger forger of ancient manuscripts. Simonidis’ death was announced for the first time in 1867 and this eventually became the accepted date: the origin of this information and its limited circulation are discussed in the paper. The news of his death circulated again in 1890, when it was reported widely in the press together with details previously unknown, including the mention of Simonidis’ first name as “Alcibiades”. The source of the spreading of the news was a curious, lengthy article, published om a Viennese newspaper, the «Neues Wiener Tagblatt», on September 25, 1890. This article, that has since been completely forgotten, is republished here with an Italian translation.

===================

Note that this is an example of a first name not being used much throughout the years. Similar to the concern about John as part of the name of Kyriakos of Thessalonaki.

Note also that the 1890 article may have other good information.
