It is the Greek Shorter rescension that is dated to the post-Christian era. The studies of J. R. Harris, D. C. Simpson, J. D. Thomas, R. Hanhart, J. R. Busto Saiz, and C. A. Moore have shown that the Greek Short Recension is a redacted form of the earlier Greek Long Recension, produced in an effort to improve the Greek phraseology and literary character of the Tobit story. SINCE the finding of Codex Sinaiticus the text of the Book of Tobit has been an important problem. Up until recently scholars have been about equally divided1 as to priority in favor of the Sinaitic recension (which we shall designate Rs) and the recension represented best by the Codices Vaticanus and Alexandrinus (which we shall designate Rv). Rs is more Semitic, while Rv is somewhat shorter and is written in a more idiomatic Greek, although it has practically all the parts of the story.

The knowledge of the book of Toblt in the west was based on the short version of Codex Vaticanus and Alexandrinus, and the Latin Vulgate. This version dominated until the mid 19th century. The Greek long version was not known to the west until its discovery by Constantine Tischendorf in 1844 at St. Catherine’s Monastery of the Sinai.
