Luke 8:43 - "which had spent all her living upon physicians" -
"How the "scholarship" game is really played.
Luke 8:43 KJB (ESV 2016, Holman 2009, CSB 2017, ISV 2014, RV 1881, ASV 1901, NRSV 1989) - “And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, WHICH HAD SPENT ALL HER LIVING UPON PHYSICIANS, neither could be healed of any...”
NIV (NASB, NET, RSV 1971, Legacy Standard Bible 2021, Catholic St. Joseph, Jehovah Witness NWT) - "And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years [ ] but no one could heal her."
The capitalized words WHICH HAD SPENT ALL HER LIVING UPON PHYSICIANS are found in the Majority of all remaining Greek manuscripts as well as Sinaiticus, Alexandrinus and C, as well as the Old Latin a, aur, b, c, f, ff2, l, q, the Latin Vulgate, the Syriac Peshitta, Harclean, Palestinian, the Ethiopic, Coptic, Gothic and Slavonic ancient versions.
Basically two manuscripts omit all these words - Vaticanus and P75, so we see once again that the so called “oldest and best manuscripts” are in disagreement with each other.

The Greek reading of “WHICH HAD SPENT ALL HER LIVING UPON PHYSICIANS” was first omitted by Westcott and Hort and was originally omitted in the previous Nestle critical Greek text 4th edition 1934 and the 21st edition of 1975. Even though Westcott and Hort omitted these words, the Revised Version 1881 and the ASV 1901 did not go along with them, but they included all these words and read like the KJB.
But now the latest Nestle-Aland 27th and 28th editions have put all these words back in their critical Greek text! And even though they now are back in the Critical Greek text, versions like the NASB, NIV, LSB and NET do NOT put them in! Such are the ways of modern scholarship.
There is a slightly similar passage found in Mark 5:26 but the Greek text there is very different than the one found here in Luke 8:43. The question then becomes, Did God inspired these words or not?

The Modern Greek Bible also includes all these words - ητις δαπανησασα εις ιατρους ολον τον βιον αυτης = who spent all her living on physicians

However versions that OMIT all these words are Rotherham’s Emphasized bible 1902, Moffat Translation 1913, Goodspeed N.T. 1923, the RSV 1952-1973, the NASBs 1960 - 1995, the NIVs 1984 and 2011 English editions, the New English Bible 1970, the Revised English Bible 1989, the Jehovah Witness New World Translation, the Complete Jewish Bible 1998, Dan Wallace and company’s NET version 2006 (Big surprise;-) and the Legacy Standard Bible 2021.
Notice that the ASV included the words but the revision called the NASB omitted them. While the contrary is true with the RSV which omitted the words, but then the revisions of the NRSV and ESV put them back in again!
The Catholic Connection.
Among the Catholic versions we see the same, typical, bible agnostic confusion. The earlier Douay Rheims 1582 and Douay of 1950 contained the reading “which had spent all her living upon physicians”, but the 1969 Jerusalem bible, the 1970 St. Joseph NAB and the 1985 New Jerusalem bible omitted these words.
But there is more - Now the 2009 Catholic Public Domain Version and The Revised Douay-Rheims 2012 have come out and once again they put the words back in the text - “And there was a certain woman, with a flow of blood for twelve years, WHO PAID OUT ALL HER SUBSTANCE ON PHYSICIANS, and she was unable to be cured by any of them.”
Modern “scholarship” is nothing but consistently inconsistent! Now you see it; now you don’t. No reading is sure; anything and everything can change at any moment. This is the true nature of their “science” of textual criticism.
Foreign Language Bibles.
Among foreign language Bibles that include the words “which had spent all her living upon physicians” are the Latin Vulgage 420 A.D. and the Clementine Vulgate update of 2006 - “quæ in medicos erogaverat omnem substantiam suam”, the Anglo-Saxon Gospels of 990 A.D., the Spanish Sagradas Escrituras 1569, Cipriano de Valera 1602, the Reina Valera 1909, 1960, 1995 - “y que había gastado en médicos todo cuanto tenía” , the French Matin 1744 and French Ostervald 1996 and the French Louis Segond of 2007- “et qui avait dépensé tout son bien en médecins”, Luther’s German bible 1545 and the 2000 German Schlachter Bible - “und all ihr Gut an die Ärzte gewandt hatte”, the Italian Diodati 1649 and La Nuova Diodati 1991 and the Italian Riveduta of 2006 - “ed avea spesa ne’ medici tutta la sua sostanza”, the Portuguese Almeida Actualized 2009 and A Sagrada Biblia em Portugués - “e gastara com os médicos todos os seus haveres.”, the Hungarian Karoli Bible, The Czech BKR bible, the Dutch Staten-Vertaling, the Smith and Van Dyke Arabic bible, and The Polish Updated Gdansk Bible 2013.
The Modern Hebrew Bible - ואשה זבת דם שתים עשרה שנה אשר הוציאה כל קנינה לרפאים ואין איש יכל לרפאתה׃
and it is the reading found in the Modern Greek Bible - "Καὶ γυνὴ οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἵματος ἀπὸ ἐτῶν δώδεκα, ἥτις ἰατροῖς προσαναλώσασα ὅλον τὸν βίον οὐκ ἴσχυσεν ὑπ' οὐδενὸς θεραπευθῆναι"
Even though the English editions of the NIV omit all these words, yet the NIV Portuguese translation, called Nova Versão Internacional of 1999, has them in their text and reads- “e gastara tudo o que tinha com os médicos” = “and had spent all her living on physicians”!
Friends don’t let friends use modern perversions. Get yourself the Authorized King James Bible and you will never go wrong.
