the spirit, and the water, and the blood - small "s" - earthly witnesses.

I was reading John 19 this morning.
Perhaps the use of "ghost" in v30 can partially explain the use of "spirit" (instead of "Spirit") in 1 John 5.8.

Steven Avery
This also confirms the interpretation of the earthly witnesses as a connection to the crucifixion.
This is lost in the modern versions without the heavenly witneses by the capitalization of Spirit, obliquely trying to make the verse refer to the Holy Spirit.
What JESUS said from He Himself? John 7:38-39:
38 He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake JESUS of the Spirit -GOD, the Word/Scripture, is Spirit, SELF-EXECUTING- , which they that believe on Him should receive: (receive from the Water-from the Spirit of GOD) for the Holy (Ghost is a nickname) Spirit was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Acts 2:1-4 and 16-19ASV -
1 And when the day of Pentecost was now come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder, like as of fire; and it sat upon each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

16 but this is that which hath been spoken through the prophet Joel:
17 And it shall be in the last days, saith GOD,
I will pour forth of my Spirit upon all flesh:
And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
And your young men shall see visions,
And your old men shall dream dreams:
18 Yea and on my servants and on my handmaidens in those days
Will I pour forth of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. (The Word of GOD is pure prophecy to be preached by GOD's people)
19 And I will show wonders in the heaven above,
And signs on the earth beneath;
Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke:

Again: JESUS said:
John 7:38
38 He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

John 8:51 - Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death. (The Word is GOD. GOD is life)

John 11: 26 - Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? (If not...how can fulfill 1Corinthians 15:51-55 and Philippians 3:20-21 in your life? think about it)

Matthew 11:27 -... no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal Him.

1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 combined with Daniel 12:1-3
15 For this we say unto you by the Word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them...to meet the Lord...and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Blood and water

John 19:34 - 34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

The blood came there out because JESUS was made in the likeness of men
, though He was GOD. (Philippians 2:6-7 combined with Hebrews 1:8): Furthermore, without shedding of blood is no remission - Hebrews 9:22.

The water because JESUS is the source of the water's life-the Word made flesh- and as He said:
Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into EVERLASTING life.

Why is lower case “s” on “spirit” right? (2024)

Having Barker's printings all online now is a huge help for showing things making their appearance prior to the Cambridge work of 1628/1629.

Steven Avery
Matthew Verschuur - good to document any editions with small case water and blood. Are there any before 1637?

The use of "s" or "S" in Acts 11:12, Acts 11:28, 1 John 5:8 varies in some pre-1769 printings. For examples:
This scan of a 1611 King James Bible printed by Robert Barker shows that they have as the small "s" in Acts 11:12 and Acts 11:28, but the capital "S" in 1 John 5:8. (Note that Water and Blood are also capitalized in 1 John 5:8).

This scan of a 1619 King James Bible printed by Bonham, Norton, and Bill shows that they have the small "s" in Acts 11:12, the capital "S" in Acts 11:28 and 1 John 5:8. (Notice, it also has Blood capitalized in 1 John 5:8.)

This scan of a 1631 King James Bible printed by Robert Barker shows that they have the capital "S" in all of the three verses, Acts 11:12, Acts 11:28, 1 John 5:8. (Notice, it also has Water capitalized in 1 John 5:8.)

Steven Avery
Robert Lee Vaughn - the first one that really counts is when water and blood are lower case.
1637 revision
========================
Matthew Verschuur shows 1637 Cambridge:
"1 John 5:8 correctly has lowercase “s” on the word “spirit”, as was published in 1638, 1769 and in the Pure Cambridge Edition. Most historical editions of the KJB have lower case “s” on “spirit” at 1 John 5:8, this is a scan from the 1637 Cambridge. "

I have to check 1637/1638
Picture is at url, also mirrored on my purebibleforum.

Robert Lee Vaughn
This 1637 printing has Spirit and Water uppercase, blood in lowercase. (Also no Apocrypha, interestingly)
https://www.google.com/.../THE_HOLY_BIBLE.../ub1fAAAAcAAJ
This 1638 printing is as mentioned with all lowercase.

I put together a list of links to scans I have found online. It is intended to be of printings of the King James. I left one on that I have not had time to double-check -- that is listed like it is King James, but I suspect may not be.

What matters and prevails is the Word of GOD. The Word of GOD is from everlasting to everlasting, the Word is GOD,self-executing/ self-executable, and GOD is Spirit-John 4:24. Particularly, I am not concerned, neither I stumb on translations of biblical versions. Here's how I interpret Scriptures regardless of how it was written.

John 19:30 - When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar He said, It is finished(Psalm 69:21 combined with John 5:17.Take a look.),: and JESUS bowed His head, and gave up the Spirit (not ghost, why ghost? What is this? It sounds very very strange for the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of GOD).
JESUS said: GOD is Spirit-John 4:24. What is Spirit? Spirit is the Word, in other words, the Holy Scriptures-Hebrews 1:3&8: -->1 GOD, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days (last two days or around 2000 years) spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of His glory, and the EXPRESS IMAGE (image by written) of the Person of GOD, and upholding all things by the Word of His power, when He had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:.

JESUS said: John 6:63 -...the words that I speak unto you, they are Spirit, and they are Life. John 12:47-50-->48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that Judgeth him: the Word that I have spoken, the same shall Judge him in the last Day(the Lord's Day, this Day arrived). 49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, He gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. 50 And I know that His commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

GOD is Spirit. John 4:24.
... the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63

1John 5:7 - There are three that testifies in heaven, the Father(GOD the Father), the Word(the Word made flesh-JESUS) and the Holy Spirit(the God of the earth(Revelation 11:4 combined with John 15:16 and John 16:12-15): and these three are One.

8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit(the Word of GOD; the Word is GOD, GOD is Spirit), and the Water(the testimony of JESUS-John 7:38-39.Take a look.), and the blood (JESUS came by water and blood...not by water only, but by water and blood (of course), the Word was made flesh). And it is the Spirit (it is GOD the Father) that beareth witness(John 5:31-32 combined with John 7:18 and 8:18.Take a look), because the Spirit is Truth: and these three agree in One.
