His Grace Vahan S. Hovhanessian is the Primate Bishop of the Armenian Archdiocese of France and Pontifical Legate to Western Europe. He is a member of the Brotherhood of Holy Etchmiadzin Bishop Vahan holds a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from Fordham University, New York, USA. He is the chairman of the unit “Bible in the Eastern and Oriental Christian Traditions” in the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL). The Armenian version of the Bible and the apocryphal literature in the churches of the East, including the Armenian church, have been two of his main research interests based on his doctoral research of the apocryphal writing Third Corinthians, which was published as a book “Third Corinthians: Reclaiming Paul for Christian Orthodoxy” (Peter Lang, 2000).

He was born in 1986 in Yerevan. In 2002 he entered the Gevorgyan Theological Seminary of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and graduated with honors in 2008 with a degree of Bachelor’s and Master’s theology. In 2006, Father Garegin was ordained deacon, and three years later became a priest and became a member of the Holy Echmiadzin Congregation. 2009-2010 he was the head of the department of church and state relations of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. In 2010, he went to the UK to continue his academic studies at Sheffield University and lived at Harvard College for two years (Mirfield). In 2011, he was offered a Ph.D. in Sheffield, which he did, along with Hebrew studies at Oxford. He also lectured at a number of colleges at the university and the Institute of Oriental Studies. In 2010, Father Garegin was appointed spiritual pastor of the Birmingham, Oxford and Manchester communities. 2013-2014 he was the pastor of the church of St. Egishe in London. AÒ er the end of the PhD program, Father Garegin Hambardzumyan returned to Armenia and took up the post of deputy head of the Christian Education Department of the Holy See of Holy Etchmiadzin. In 2015, he beacame dean of the Gevorgyan Theological Seminary in St. Echmiadzin. In 2016, the publishing house De Gruyter published his book under the title “ The Book of Sirach in the Armenian Biblical Tradition: Yakob Nalean and His Commentary on Sirach (Deuterocanonical and Cognate Literature Studies“

S. Peter Cowe is Narekatsi Professor of Armenian Studies at the Univeristy of California, Los Angeles. Previously he has held positions in Armenology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at Columbia University, New York. His research has been supported by NEH and Fulbright-Hays fellowships. A recipient of the Garbis Papazian award for Armenology, he was recently inducted into the Accademia Ambrosiana, Milan (Classe di Studi sul Vicino Oriente). The Armenian Bible has been one of his main research interests from his doctoral study of the book of Daniel (Scholars Press, 1992) to his latest participation in the three-volume reference work The Textual History of the Bible (Brill 2016-). He is currently preparing a critical text of the two early Armenian versions of Song of Songs.

Revd. Dr. Nerses Nersessian was born in Tehran in 1948 and baptised under the name Vrej. He was admitted into Armenian College & Philanthropic Academy in India Calcutta in 1958 which he leÒ in 1965 to continue his studies at the Theological Seminary in Holy Etchmiadzin (Soviet Armenia). AÒ er completing the three year course in 1968 he was sent to London to continue his studies. He spent his first year in England as a seminarian in the Society of the Sacred Mission (Kelham) and then enrolled for further studies at King’s College, University of London. He graduated in May 1972 from the Theological Department with the degree of Bachelor of Divinity (Honours) followed by PH.D in March 1976 from the Department of Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies. His Doctoral Thesis under the supervision of Prof. D.M.Nicol (1923-2003) was The Tondrakain Movement. Religious movements in the Armenian church from the fourth to the tenth centuries published in London 1987 and reprinted in the Princeton Theological Monograph series in 1988.In 1975 he joined the British Library staff as Curator in Charge of the Christian Middle East section, a position which he held until his retirement in 2012. During his tenure in the British Library he has published several monographs, numerous articles and curated exhibitions of huge popular success, including the unique ‘Treasures from the Ark. 1700 years of Armenian Christian Art in 2001. On the 15th of September 2017 in the Armenian Nationial Library a FestschriÒ suitably called «Reflections on Armenia and the Christian Orient: Studies in Honour of Vrej Nersessian» was presented to him at a reception held in the National State Library of Armenia which (p. 11-24) lists all his publications and exhibitions curated by him both national and international. He was ordained priest in July 1983 in the Church of St Sarkis in Erevan by Archbishop Nerses Bozapalian of blessed memory; raised to the rank of Archpriest by His Holiness Vazgen Ist Catholicos of All Armenians (1955-1994) and in 2012 His Holiness Garegin Ist Catholicos of All Armenians awarded him the ‘Saint Nerses Shnorhali’ gold medal for services to the Christian Middle East section of the British Library and in particular the Armenian church. In 2005 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the Armenian Academy of Sciences for his contributions to Armenian Studies and Armenian Art. On 12th of December 2017 Heythrop College of the University of London awarded him Doctor of Divinity degree, honoris causa as a distinguished scholar and former curator of the Christian Middle east Section of the British Library.

Ani Shahinian is a D.Phil. student in Oriental Theology at the University of Oxford. Ms. Shahinian holds an M.A. degree in Near Eastern and Languages and Cultures - Armenian Studies from UCLA, and graduate certificates in Philosophy and Theology from the University of Oxford. She received her B.A. in Philosophy, Ethics, and Professional Writing from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Prior to her graduate studies, Ms. Shahinian worked at the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), assisting with investigations and prosecutions of human trafficking cases and criminal civil rights abuses. While working at DOJ, she detected parallels between contemporary and historic human rights violations. Her career at DOJ became a corresponding journey of investigation and discovery of her identity as a Christian Armenian-American, directing her research interests in the field of Eastern Christian Studies. Her doctorate research addresses the question of Christian martyrdom in the context of Christian-Muslim relations in the Ottoman Empire, and more broadly Christian martyrdom narratives in the Armenian history and literature.

The Armenian version of the Bible and the apocryphal literature in the churches of the East, including the Armenian church, have been two of his main research interests based on his doctoral research of the apocryphal writing Third Corinthians, which was published as a book “Third Corinthians: Reclaiming Paul for Christian Orthodoxy” (Peter Lang, 2000).

He was born in 1986 in Yerevan. In 2002 he entered the Gevorgyan Theological Seminary of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and graduated with honors in 2008 with a degree of Bachelor’s and Master’s theology. In 2006, Father Garegin was ordained deacon, and three years later became a priest and became a member of the Holy Echmiadzin Congregation. 2009-2010 he was the head of the department of church and state relations of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. In 2010, he went to the UK to continue his academic studies at Sheffield University and lived at Harvard College for two years (Mirfield). In 2011, he was offered a Ph.D. in Sheffield, which he did, along with Hebrew studies at Oxford. He also lectured at a number of colleges at the university and the Institute of Oriental Studies. In 2010, Father Garegin was appointed spiritual pastor of the Birmingham, Oxford and Manchester communities. 2013-2014 he was the pastor of the church of St. Egishe in London. AÒ er the end of the PhD program, Father Garegin Hambardzumyan returned to Armenia and took up the post of deputy head of the Christian Education Department of the Holy See of Holy Etchmiadzin. In 2015, he beacame dean of the Gevorgyan Theological Seminary in St. Echmiadzin. In 2016, the publishing house De Gruyter published his book under the title “ The Book of Sirach in the Armenian Biblical Tradition: Yakob Nalean and His Commentary on Sirach (Deuterocanonical and Cognate Literature Studies“

S. Peter Cowe is Narekatsi Professor of Armenian Studies at the Univeristy of California, Los Angeles. Previously he has held positions in Armenology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at Columbia University, New York. His research has been supported by NEH and Fulbright-Hays fellowships. A recipient of the Garbis Papazian award for Armenology, he was recently inducted into the Accademia Ambrosiana, Milan (Classe di Studi sul Vicino Oriente). The Armenian Bible has been one of his main research interests from his doctoral study of the book of Daniel (Scholars Press, 1992) to his latest participation in the three-volume reference work The Textual History of the Bible (Brill 2016-). He is currently preparing a critical text of the two early Armenian versions of Song of Songs.

Revd. Dr. Nerses Nersessian was born in Tehran in 1948 and baptised under the name Vrej. He was admitted into Armenian College & Philanthropic Academy in India Calcutta in 1958 which he leÒ in 1965 to continue his studies at the Theological Seminary in Holy Etchmiadzin (Soviet Armenia). AÒ er completing the three year course in 1968 he was sent to London to continue his studies. He spent his first year in England as a seminarian in the Society of the Sacred Mission (Kelham) and then enrolled for further studies at King’s College, University of London. He graduated in May 1972 from the Theological Department with the degree of Bachelor of Divinity (Honours) followed by PH.D in March 1976 from the Department of Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies. His Doctoral Thesis under the supervision of Prof. D.M.Nicol (1923-2003) was The Tondrakain Movement. Religious movements in the Armenian church from the fourth to the tenth centuries published in London 1987 and reprinted in the Princeton Theological Monograph series in 1988.In 1975 he joined the British Library staff as Curator in Charge of the Christian Middle East section, a position which he held until his retirement in 2012. During his tenure in the British Library he has published several monographs, numerous articles and curated exhibitions of huge popular success, including the unique ‘Treasures from the Ark. 1700 years of Armenian Christian Art in 2001. On the 15th of September 2017 in the Armenian Nationial Library a FestschriÒ suitably called «Reflections on Armenia and the Christian Orient: Studies in Honour of Vrej Nersessian» was presented to him at a reception held in the National State Library of Armenia which (p. 11-24) lists all his publications and exhibitions curated by him both national and international. He was ordained priest in July 1983 in the Church of St Sarkis in Erevan by Archbishop Nerses Bozapalian of blessed memory; raised to the rank of Archpriest by His Holiness Vazgen Ist Catholicos of All Armenians (1955-1994) and in 2012 His Holiness Garegin Ist Catholicos of All Armenians awarded him the ‘Saint Nerses Shnorhali’ gold medal for services to the Christian Middle East section of the British Library and in particular the Armenian church. In 2005 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the Armenian Academy of Sciences for his contributions to Armenian Studies and Armenian Art. On 12th of December 2017 Heythrop College of the University of London awarded him Doctor of Divinity degree, honoris causa as a distinguished scholar and former curator of the Christian Middle east Section of the British Library.

Ani Shahinian is a D.Phil. student in Oriental Theology at the University of Oxford. Ms. Shahinian holds an M.A. degree in Near Eastern and Languages and Cultures - Armenian Studies from UCLA, and graduate certificates in Philosophy and Theology from the University of Oxford. She received her B.A. in Philosophy, Ethics, and Professional Writing from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Prior to her graduate studies, Ms. Shahinian worked at the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), assisting with investigations and prosecutions of human trafficking cases and criminal civil rights abuses. While working at DOJ, she detected parallels between contemporary and historic human rights violations. Her career at DOJ became a corresponding journey of investigation and discovery of her identity as a Christian Armenian-American, directing her research interests in the field of Eastern Christian Studies. Her doctorate research addresses the question of Christian martyrdom in the context of Christian-Muslim relations in the Ottoman Empire, and more broadly Christian martyrdom narratives in the Armenian history and literature.
