Correspondence between Henry Deane and John Eliot Hodgkin relating to the forgeries by George Simonides. Two letters from Charles Stewart to Henry Deane. Reports on the Uranius of Simonides. A pamphlet 'Biographical memoir of Constantine Simonides, Dr PH, of Stageira, with a brief defence of the authenticity of his manuscripts' by Charles Stewart, London 1859. Another pamphlet 'Report of the Council of the Royal Society of Literature on some of the Mayer papyri and the palimsest ms. of Uranius belonging to M. Simonides with letters from MM. Pertz, Ehrenberg and Dindorf', London 1863.

These letters could be helpful for a number of reasons.

The biographical memoir is probably available through other sources, and salient points are mentioned in the 1862-1863 debates. The Report of the Royal Society may be available, and is likely only of moderate interest to the Simonides studies.

What would be most helpful, and likely new, are:

Oh, yes. The library contents description is wrong; it says two letters from Charles Stewart to Deane but they are by his brother Henry at the family home (Mar 3 1864 and April 20 1864, pp, 19-20). Henry says Simonides was still at the seaside in the first letter. I can take another look through to see if I missed anything re: Charles...

... Simonides seems to have spoken about the date of Sinaiticus prior to September 1862, in so far as Tregelles knew of this theory before then. He spoke of it to J.E. Can either of these be found in Tischendorf?

This also mentions that he sold to the British Museum in 1850s:

more about the Melbourne

Report on the materials we have from Melbourne

"I think it was as the accession number is H17839 which is in Box 109/4(a-d), but in the 91 pages copied are materials from both H17838 [Uranius] and H17840 [Henry Deane's report] (only H17839 comes up in their online search"

Plus the talk on Feb 27, 2018 by Malcolm Choat at Macquerie will utilize this material.

The PDF from the library includes about 60 pages of English correspondence, the handwritings are not the easiest to decipher, and could use perusal.

They also have the 30 page palimpsest report from the Royal Society, which is also online.

Yet no biography. (That is also online.)
