The letters also reveal a worsening of relations between Simonides and Mayer, who had decided at a certain point to stop financing Simonides’ publications and leave him at risk of arrest for debts and lawsuits.47 Hodgkin did not hesitate to help the Greek on this occasion, as he had done also in other moments of illness or practical difficulty.48
