The Budget is a weekly newspaper that publishes dispatches from Amish and Mennonite communities, primarily located in North America (Carey, 2012). “Scribes” prepare updates on local news, including marriages, births, accidents, illnesses, and deaths. Approximately 18,500 copies of the newspaper circulate weekly in nearly all known Amish settlements.2Accordingly, The Budget is “an important institution, serving as the major means of communication among all Amish settlements” (Hostetler, 1993, p. 377).
